RE

In line with with The Church of England’s ‘Statement of Entitlement’, at Broad Chalke CofE Primary School we believe a high-quality sequential religious education (RE) programme is essential. We teach a full curriculum that prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in modern Britain. Central to our religious education provision is the study of Christianity as a living and diverse faith, focused on the teaching of Jesus and the Church.

Our Intent

At Broad Chalke CofE Primary School we want to engage, inspire, challenge and encourage pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions, explore different religious beliefs, values and traditions and develop a more rigorous understanding of Christianity, other religious traditions, beliefs and practices that are followed in our multi-cultural society. 

Our curriculum promotes respect towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. 

Our Implementation

We follow the Wiltshire agreed syllabus and use the schemes Understanding Christianity and The Emmanuel Project to deliver Religious Education lessons. 

'Understanding Christianity' is a Diocesan approved programme which helps children to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith and its key theological concepts. This is integrated with their understanding of themselves and of the world

The Understanding Christianity scheme is organised into 8 theological concepts. Each year group's learning builds on each concept and utilises a key question e.g. What do Christians believe God was like?  At Broad Chalke we have organised our curriculum provision carefully to ensure the children acquire a 'deep' knowledge and understanding of all 8 core concepts. 

In addition to weekly taught lessons, we plan RE encounter days (termly)  and invite 'The Bridge Youth Project' (a local Christian charity) to deliver RE. 

                                                   

The Big Frieze is used to show the big story of the Bible and the seven key theological concepts. This pictorial representation is designed to make pupils aware of the wider context of each concept, unit and text studied in Understanding Christianity. Reminding pupils regularly of where a particular text occurs within the ‘big story’, by pointing it out on the Big Frieze, helps to build up a coherent understanding of the core concepts and the relationship between them.

This timeline of Biblical events is displayed in the main hall and is used during Collective Worships to identify key Bible stories and characters. 

                    

The 'Emmanuel Project Scheme' supports our planning of unit around Judaism (KS1) and Hinduism and Islam (KS2). Children’s learning aims to instil respect for different views and interpretations of key religious concepts and focuses on how people of faith live, believe and express their beliefs.
